You are your own best friend

Stories of rejection and disappointment have become too familiar for you. The more you grow older, the more you realize that you cannot rely on other people to please you or make you happy. External happiness is not the most reliable form of happiness. So, what is?

Have you thought about internal happiness? We may not be familiar with your being your own best friend (that may sound kind of cheesy), but your mind, breath, and heart are always with you as long as you are alive. Why not become friends with yourself?

Here are a few steps to being friends with yourself:

1. Acknowledge how you’re feeling. Having a crappy day? Put a label on it. Just be real. Don’t try to change it to happy.

2. Tune in to your body. Is it super tense in one particular spot or a few spots? Imagine you are sending love to those particular spots.

3. Let go of your expectations of others. This is the hardest for me. I’m constantly working on it. Others don’t owe you anything.

4. Love yourself more aka forgiveness. It’s okay to make mistakes. That’s human. You need to forgive yourself, learn from the past, and prepare for the future by focusing on today.
